Feature Showcase: Radar Guns

Law enforcement on Kentucky Roleplay just got a serious upgrade. Officers now have access to a purpose-built Radar Gun -> a fully functional speed detection tool designed from the ground up for realistic traffic enforcement roleplay.

How It Works

Equip the Radar Gun and aim at traffic. The gun projects a detection cone in the direction you're pointing, scanning for vehicles up to 50 tiles away within a 30-degree arc. Only vehicles with their engine running and on the same floor level are detected, no false readings through walls or across buildings.

When a vehicle enters the beam, its live speed appears instantly on a heads-up display that orbits your character, always facing the direction you're aiming. The entire system operates in real-time with no menus, no commands, and no interruptions to gameplay.

The HUD

The radar display is a compact overlay panel tethered to your character. It shows:

  • Current detected speed -> large, readable numbers front and center
  • Clock speed -> the configured speed threshold (e.g., CLK 25)
  • Unit indicator -> MPH or KM/H
  • Status indicators -> including "OVER" warnings and "CAPTURED" lock states

When a vehicle exceeds your set threshold, the display shifts to orange-red with a clear visual warning. The HUD also features a subtle aim indicator so you always know exactly where the beam is pointed.

Automatic Capture

This is where it gets good. Hold your aim on an over-speed vehicle for 0.75 seconds and the system automatically locks in a capture -> a freeze-frame of the evidence that stays on screen. Each capture includes:

  • The locked speed at the moment of capture
  • The clock threshold that was exceeded
  • A wall-clock timestamp (HH:MM:SS) for evidence logging

The capture display features a flashing gold border and red "CAPTURED" bar so it's unmistakable. It holds for a configurable duration (default 7 seconds, adjustable from 3 to 30) before the gun re-arms for the next reading.

The system is edge-triggered -> one capture per speeding event. If a vehicle slows back down and then speeds up again, that's a new event and a new capture.

Audio Feedback

Three distinct sound effects keep officers informed without looking at the screen:

  • A steady pulse while scanning with no target in beam
  • A rapid beep when a vehicle is actively being tracked
  • A lock tone the moment a capture fires

Fully Configurable

Every officer can tailor their radar gun through a right-click context menu:

  • Speed threshold presets -> Quick-set from 15 up to 120, or enter any custom value
  • Unit toggle -> Switch between MPH and KM/H per gun
  • Capture hold duration -> How long the evidence freeze-frame stays on screen

All settings are saved per gun and persist between sessions. Server administrators can also set global defaults through sandbox settings.

The Radar Gun is available now for all law enforcement officers on Kentucky Roleplay (upon server launch). Stay safe out there, and watch your speed.
